KANSAS CITY, Kan. — As expected, the Chase drivers were fast in the first practice session for the Sprint Cup Series at Kansas Speedway and the only session on Friday before qualifying. All but two of the top 12 drivers were current Chase drivers. Alex Bowman (fourth) and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. (sixth) served as spoilers while Austin Dillon (28th) and Brad Keselowski (32nd) have some work to do before qualifying.

The Busch brothers both showed considerable speed. Kyle Busch, who won the spring race at Kansas Speedway earlier this season, was quickest at a speed of 194.595 mph, while Kurt Busch was second quickest. Chase Elliott rounded out the top five.

There was a brief red flag period where Reed Sorenson’s car began leaking fluid onto the track. Otherwise, the session was incident free.

Qualifying will begin at 6:15PM ET later this afternoon. The NSCS drivers will have two more practice sessions on Saturday afternoon before the race runs on Sunday.
