KANSAS CITY, Kan. — When you think of drivers who claim Kansas Speedway as their home track, you think of Clint Bowyer from Emporia, Kansas; Carl Edwards from Columbia, Missouri; and Jamie McMurray from Joplin, Missouri.

But Martin Truex Jr., a New Jersey native? Why would this be a home race for him?

Truex’s team Furniture Row Racing is based out of Denver, Colorado. Geographically speaking, the race at Kansas is the closest to FRR’s headquarters, making it somewhat of a home game for this race team.

“For Barney, for our race team, this is the closest racetrack to Denver, Colorado, so this is kind of their home track,” said Truex during a press conference on Friday afternoon. “We get a lot of fans from Colorado who said, ‘Hey we came out from Denver to support the team’, which is awesome. We get a lot of that here. It’s the shortest trip for Barney to come on Sunday and usually brings the bigger part of his family here than he does at most places. It’s great for those guys that don’t get to come to the racetrack all the time but it’s cool for a lot of our fans from out in Colorado and west of the Mississippi to get to a race to support their team.”

Those extra family, friends, and fans are hoping for a victory this weekend at a track where Truex has come close several times. He led 172 laps in the spring race earlier this season, but a freak accident with a bolt on his tire kept him from the drive towards victory lane that he looked like he was headed towards. In the spring race last year, he led 95 laps but missed out on fuel mileage. And so on and so forth.

Truex is now headed into this weekend’s race with four victories under his belt. He has been dominant in several races this season and, despite a disappointing showing in Charlotte last week, still has to be a favorite for this weekend’s Hollywood Casino 400.

“I definitely get a positive vibe coming here, positive feeling that we’ve been so close,” said Truex. “We’ve done just about everything here but win. It’s time for us to make that happen. I don’t think there’s ever been a time I’ve come here more confident. I’m looking forward to seeing how the weekend goes and seeing if we can finally close the deal here. I feel like we can do it and just ready to go out there and give it a shot.”

A win this weekend would give the No. 78 team some much needed peace of mind heading into Talladega Superspeedway next week, the final race in the Round of 12. Truex is currently 19 points to the good heading into Kansas, but a win this weekend would guarantee him a spot in the Round of 8 regardless of where he finishes in Talladega.

“The first round went awesome,” said Truex, who won two of the three races in the Round of 16. “Last week obviously didn’t go as well as we would have liked. We had a little issue there, a part failure at the end of the race. Aside from that, I think the team has done a great job. We’ve had a lot of confidence, momentum and really just been solid and consistent and not made mistakes. That’s what it’s gonna take. We’ve got some work to do this weekend to get back where we want to be. Feel great about coming here to Kansas and what we’ve been able to do here in the past. Hopefully with the position we’re in now, we can take advantage of all the things that we’ve been doing well and finally close the deal here at Kansas.”

The Hollywood Casino 400 will begin at 2:15PM ET on NBC.
