Longtime sponsor Liberty University is staying with William Byron for his upcoming move to the NASCAR XFINITY Series (NXS) and JR Motorsports (JRM).

The university will serve as the primary sponsor for Byron in 17 of the 33 races on the 2017 NXS schedule, decorating the rookie’s No. 9 Chevrolet.

Liberty University has previous history with JRM, having sponsored Byron in his tenure with JRM’s late model program from 2014-15.

“Welcoming back both William and reuniting with Liberty University, it feels like a homecoming for us,” JRM general manager Kelley Earnhardt Miller said in a release.  “It’s remarkable to see how quickly William has advanced his talents since he drove for our Late Model team.  With the support from Liberty, we have a strong platform for him to have success at the Xfinity level.”
Byron, a student at Liberty University, comes to JRM’s NXS program following a record year in the Camping World Truck Series, where he earned a series-best seven victories and 11 top fives en-route to a fifth-place finish in the series standings.
“It’s a privilege to have Liberty University on board with us in 2017,” Byron said. “I’ve been honored to have had them as a partner the last few years, and I’m excited to take them into the NASCAR Xfinity Series this season.
Former crew chief of the No. 88 “All-Star Car”, crew chief Dave Elenz will transition over to the same role with Byron’s No. 9 team. Elenz earned four victories in his two seasons with the No. 88 team, sharing triumphs with a group of drivers including Chase Elliott, Dale Earnhardt, Jr., and Kevin Harvick.
“I’m also looking forward to working with Dave [Elenz, crew chief],” Byron said. “He brings a lot to the table in terms of experience and leadership in this series.  That will go a long way in helping our No. 9 team on the track this year.”
Liberty University will also serve as an associate sponsor for the remaining 16 races. Their 17-race sponsor schedule will be released at a later date.
