WATKINS GLEN, NY – With rumors swirling in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series garage that major cutbacks are coming across the sport and specifically at Richard Childress Racing, team owner Richard Childress told Kickin’ the Tires his competitors shouldn’t be writing him off just yet.

Even before it was announced that longtime sponsor Menard’s was taking its driver and funding to Wood Brothers Racing in 2018 there was talk Childress was realigning his organization. But when asked about it Sunday at Watkins Glen International, Childress wasn’t fazed, saying there are many different things in play.

“It all depends on the number of teams and what all we are doing,” he said. “It’s no different than any of the teams out here today. We are all looking at some efficiency in the sport. NASCAR is working with all of us on a lot of different things to try to keep the competition stronger and put on better shows. And with that, you know, if we can do a little cost-work on it would be great.”

Asked if that meant cutting out one of his three teams, he didn’t answer directly, only saying the loss of Menard’s was not unexpected and his marketing team had already been working on future plans. He also had positive things to say about the driver of the No. 27 car, Paul Menard, who is sponsored by his father’s company.

“You know, we kind of knew it was coming so we were already working on some things,” Childress said. “Paul has been a great asset and Menard’s is a great, great company and I can’t say nothing but great things about them.

“Like I said, we are working on different plans for next year.”

Sounds like he is avoiding answering the question.
Richard, right now, what is the probability that you will have 3 teams next year? Yes or No?
Do you actually have a sponsor close to signing that will allow you to consider having 3 teams nest year? Yes or No?
I hate people that won’t just be honest but are more interested in making things look rosey from the outside.
