DARLINGTON, S.C. — Clint Bowyer came to Darlington Raceway with the pressure to win on his shoulders, but an engine failure makes a playoff spot even harder to obtain.

As the field came down pit road during an early caution, Bowyer’s No. 14 Ford stalled. The driver was attempting to diagnose the problem when smoke appeared.

“It just blew up,” he said after taking his machine to the garage, adding, “Doug Yates and all the guys over at his shop do such a good job of bringing us reliable, good horsepower, and it was just my time.”

Bowyer, who was already on the outside looking into the playoff group, thinks the failure came at “a pretty opportune time,” but he remains optimistic going to Richmond Raceaway.

“The way the playoffs look right now, we’re not out of this thing,” he said. “You come to all these race tracks with an urgency to win, just like we did at the Daytona 500. Richmond is a good track for us. We’ll go there and do the best we can.”

Bowyer’s stats at Richmond include two victories, four top-fives, and 12 top-10s.
