Following each points race, Kickin’ the Tires takes a deep look at the current playoff grids for both the NASCAR XFINITY Series and Camping World Truck Series, evaluating the postseason picture for NASCAR’s second and third tours.

XFINITY Series

Track: Charlotte Motor Speedway

Event: Drive for the Cure 300

Race Winner: Alex Bowman

Stage Winner(s): Erik Jones, Daniel Suarez

Who Won Big

  • Ryan Reed: It took a rally from his team and a defining drive from Reed himself, but the Daytona International Speedway winner survived to leave Charlotte with the final position in the Round of 8 by a lone point after scoring a 12th-place result.
  • Matt Tifft: It was far from a perfect day for Tifft, but the Joe Gibbs Racing driver did enough to secure himself into the Round of 8 without much issue in a ninth-place run.

 Who Hurt Their Odds:

  • Brendan Gaughan: So close. Gaughan drove one of his best races of the season, rallying to finish 11th with a strong close. But the Richard Childress Racing veteran didn’t do enough to overcome Reed’s playoff point advantage, falling one point short of advancing to the Round of 8.
  • Michael Annett, Blake Koch: Annett seemed to be on the right team to make a run, and Koch entered the 2017 playoffs one year removed from a surprisingly stout 2016 postseason run. But neither driver got the job done in this season’s Round of 12, exiting the playoffs quietly after subpar performances.
  • Jeremy Clements: He was always going to be the underdog, but Clements and his Jeremy Clements Racing team just didn’t seem to have enough car to contend in the playoffs. Still, given their underfunded situation, the fact that they even made the postseason is something to be proud of.
