It was a strong day on pit road and on the track for Jamie McMurray and his No. 1 Chip Ganassi Racing team in the Bank of America 500 at Charlotte Motor Speedway with his fifth place finish.

Passing was difficult throughout the majority of the race. Drivers had to rely on their pit crew to gain track position. Fortunately, McMurray was also good at the beginning of the race due to the PJ1 substance left on the track after heavy rains.

“We had such a good car at the beginning and you knew the race track was going to change as the substance wore off.  We just were so good at the beginning in that sticky stuff.  We were still good at the end, it is just man, it was all about getting in the right lane on the restarts,” said McMurray.

Going into the playoffs, McMurray felt that the biggest weakness for his team would be execution on pit road. Without changing any personnel, the team began to communicate and work better together as the playoffs rolled around. Because of how crucial stage points are, McMurray was concerned that he would not get any stage points

“It’s important in any round. It doesn’t matter what round you are in. I was worried where we started that we wouldn’t get any stage points. Our car was so fast at the beginning. We had an awesome pit stop so that was cool. I think we finished third in the first stage. It’s just a really good day for both cars,” said McMurray.

Although he had a strong run in Charlotte, McMurray knows that Talladega Superspeedway is looming and could negate the points he gained at Charlotte. The goal is to gain as many points as possible at Talladega.

“I know people have a shot to win. I also know I have a shot to get in a crash. That is just the reality of going in there. We are going to race hard all day long. Trying to get as many stage points as we can and hopefully win the race. That’s our goal.”
