KANSAS CITY, Kan. — The Hollywood Casino 400 doesn’t start until 3PM ET on Sunday, but already Ryan Blaney is feeling a little behind.

Following qualifying on Friday afternoon, Ryan Blaney’s time was disallowed after officials found “the package tray did not maintain its original shape”. Blaney will now start the race from the rear of the field instead of the third place starting spot he earned during the three-round session.

Blaney enters the last race for the Round of 12 only nine points above the cutoff line. The competitors he is trying to stay ahead of are Jimmie Johnson, starting 12th; Kyle Busch, starting 7th; and Matt Kenseth, starting third. With NASCAR’s new stage format this season, where the top 10 drivers earn points at pre-designated points in the race, Blaney could find himself needing to make up the difference before the checkered flag flies.

Even if Blaney is able to hang on and continue on into the Round of 8, he will still have the last pit stall section next week in Martinsville Speedway. Kansas’ qualifying session determined pit stall selection for both events as qualifying will happen the same day as the race in Martinsville.

Blaney was fourth fastest in Friday’s practice session and finished fourth in the spring race at Kansas earlier this season.
