Despite published reports, Kickin’ the Tires has been told that albeit imminent, 2004 NASCAR Monster Energy Cup Series Champion Kurt Busch has not yet signed an extension with Stewart Haas Racing.

A contract extension is expected to be signed this week and an announcement could come any time but, as of today, the final details were still being worked out. Busch said last week that he did speak with other team owners but never felt like he could find anywhere as competitive as SHR.

“Absolutely, I think that my best chance to win races and win championships is to be with Stewart Haas Racing,” Busch said, during Champion’s Week in Las Vegas. “I’ve talked with other owners and the offers were about the same from other teams. But the offers weren’t the same, as far as, level of car. And to work with Doug Yates and Ford and all of the individuals that I have grown around and felt comfortable with at Stewart Haas, that is not available at other teams.”

Busch was told earlier this year that SHR would not pick-up the option on his contract, which made him a free agent. The team was in the process of negotiating a deal with Monster Energy over the sponsorship of the No. 41 Ford Fusion. The company was clear that it wanted Busch behind the wheel, as did representatives at Ford.

During the negotiations, Director of Ford Performance, Dave Pericak, told Kickin’ the Tires, “We have every intention of keeping Kurt and putting him in a Ford next year and years to come. I know people want to read into it, they wanna, they want to have all kinds of rumors and whatnot. All I can say is we want him in the car, we are working it out. I am sure we’ll get it done.”
