During the 2018 NASCAR Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on Friday night, Dusty Brandel accepted the 2018 Squier-Hall award, named after broadcasting legends Ken Squier and Barney Hall. Jim France, brother of Bill France Jr., was honored with the Landmark Award of Excellence.

Brandel has been an icon in the NASCAR media landscape for over 60 years. Brandel is known not only for her journalism expertise but was the first woman to report from the NASCAR garage.

The writing bug for Brandel began in 1955 with Hollywood Citizen-News covering a car show. Her first motorsports assignment was in November 1955 for a Sports Car Club of America race and was excepted with open arms.

After a request, Brandel had to choose a nickname. She chose “Dusty” to make it easier for her to gain credentials. The most signature item Brandel had was wearing hats. In 1972, Brandel was able to enter the garages of United States Auto Club and NASCAR.

Brandel is the first person from the West Coast to receive the Squire-Hall Award.

For France, being behind the scenes was the place to be. France’s career not only included being in the behind the scenes operations of NASCAR but also for the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA).

While his brother, “Big Bill”, was 11 years older, France had to grow into the  business fo the sport. Just like everyone in the first family, France had to work at Daytona International Speedway in every position.

In 1971, France became the treasure for NASCAR and was promoted to vice president in 1972— coinciding with his brothers move to NASCAR president. To this day, France considers his tole as more of a support.

With the acceptance of the Landmark Award, NASCAR’s best kept secret comes to life in Jim France.

How many more members of the France Family are going to get some kind of award from the hall of fame. Let’s just give them a blanket award for every member of the family and be done with it.

Such a great family that holds grudges on people who belong in the hall of fame. Dare I say Smokey Yunick and Ed Otto for beginners?
