In a night that highlighted several underdogs, Josh Williams scored a top-10 finish at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Williams took advantage of a caution on lap 248 to take the wave around. His No. 92 Frog Fuel / Genteel Coatings Chevrolet Camaro SS moved back onto the lead lap. One lap after the restart, another caution waved when Riley Herbst, Justin Haley, and Colby Howard crashed.

After restarting 16th, the DGM Racing driver worked his way forward. Williams climbed to battle for a top-10 spot when three drivers encountered trouble. Flat tires for AJ Allmendinger, Haley, and Ryan Sieg moved the Port Charlotte, FL native up the running order.

Two late cautions forced Williams to battle with BJ McLeod, Brandon Brown, and Jeremy Clements for a top-10 position. As he fought to hold off McLeod, Allmendinger joined the fray. That allowed Brown and Clements to pull away in overtime. When the checkered flag waved, Williams crossed the line in ninth, ahead of the Kaulig Racing driver.

That was not the first battle between Allmendinger and Williams in the Cheddar’s 300 presented by Alsco. The duo battled for the final stage point in the second stage. Allmendinger prevailed after multiple laps side-by-side, taking the 10th position with 20 laps to go in the stage.

The ninth-place finish is the second top-10 for Williams in 2020 and first on a short track. It is also the third top-10 of his NASCAR Xfinity Series career. The ninth-place finish is just the eighth top-10 for the Mario Gosselin-owned team. Williams tied his DGM teammate, Alex Labbe with three top-10 finishes for the organization each.

The ninth-place finish moved Williams up from 15th to 14th in the points standings. He is just 19-points behind Brown, who holds the final playoff berth. Williams is 145-points behind leader Chase Briscoe.
