FORT WORTH, TX – Richard ‘The King’ Petty may not know which manufacturer his team, Richard Petty Motorsports (RPM) will run in 2018 and beyond but Kickin’ the Tires has confirmed it won’t be a Toyota.

“I’ll let you know when I find out,” Petty said after being asked if he had determined which manufacturer the team would use after it signed Darrell ‘Bubba’ Wallace to the iconic No. 43 car. With only three manufacturers in NASCAR, Petty has a choice of staying where he is or going to Toyota or Chevrolet.

However, David Wilson, President of Toyota Racing Development (TRD), put the kybosh on questions of whether the manufacturer was in negotiations with Petty.

“We’re all set for next year, Jerry” Wilson said. “We’re coming back with Joe Gibbs Racing and Furniture Row Racing, so there will be five supported teams from Toyota for 2018. I cannot comment to what RPM or any other team is doing but Toyota is set for 2018.”

With Toyota out of the equation it gives more credence to speculation of RPM forming an alliance with Richard Childress Racing and switching to Chevrolet but there has been nothing confirmed on that front. An attempt to reach out to Jim Campbell, Chevrolet’s Vice President of Performance Vehicles and Motorsports, was unsuccessful.
