NEWTON, Iowa –After running 103 laps and staying consistently in the Top 15 for more than half of those laps, flames came out from underneath the dash and forced Parker Retzlaff to take his Jordan Anderson Racing machine to the garage in the Xfinity Series race at Iowa Speedway.
Hoping to get the No. 31 Chevrolet back on the track, Retzlaff talked with his crew as they removed door panels, wiring and other parts to find where the fire began. A half-dozen NASCAR officials surrounded his car, watching over the frenzy.
“It just lost all power off Turn 2 and it started to smoke and there was a fire under the dash,” a frustrated Retzlaff told Kickin’ the Tires as his crew continued to work behind him. “One of the power wires shorted and just started a fire through the whole wire, so it was just a fire under the dash that burned all the power wires and everything.”
Asked about all the NASCAR officials watching over his crew as they tried to trace the problem and replace the wiring, Retzlaff said they were just monitoring the situation.
“They are just watching us as we sit here trying to fix it, trying to see if we can go back out and make more laps,” he said.
Retzlaff is currently 16th in Xfinity Series points.
