Prepare for a dose of nostalgia, old-school NASCAR fans – Andy Petree is back with Richard Childress Racing (RCR).

The organization announced on Monday that Petree, 59, has been named Vice President of Competition, stepping into the role just two months after agreeing to an advisory role with RCR in October.

A native of Hickory, N.C., Petree was also a member of RCR through the early 1990s, joining the organization as crew chief for Dale Earnhardt from 1993-95 after six years of working with Phil Parsons and Harry Gant. It was during Petree’s tenure that Earnhardt earned his sixth and record-tying seventh Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series (then Winston Cup) championships, winning a combined 10 races en-route to back-to-back titles in 1993 and ’94.

In more than three decades within motorsports, Petree has held the roles of driver, crew chief, car owner, color commentator and, most recently, broadcast analyst for FOX Sports.

“These organizational moves will strengthen our competition department tremendously,” RCR Chairman and CEO Richard Childress said in a release.
“We felt that Andy did an exceptional job in the past month during his review of our competition area. Bringing him on as a Vice President of Competition is a valuable addition to our leadership team.”
Joining Petree in accepting a new role at RCR is Dr. Eric Warren, whom has accepted the role of Chief Technology Officer. A graduate of North Carolina State University, Warren has worked within RCR’s ranks since October 2012.
“I’ve known Andy for a long time and we’re thrilled to have him work alongside our team, including Eric in his new role as Chief Technology Officer,” Childress said. “This move will allow Eric to use his years of experience and many technical talents to focus on engineering and the application of emerging technologies.”
Both changes are effective immediately.
