Erik Jones claimed his first top-10 of 2020 Sunday in the Pennzoil 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, his first with new team owner Richard Petty.
The 10th-place result comes after finishes of 39th in the Daytona 500, 14th at the Daytona Road Course, and 27th last week at Homestead.
After starting in the 24th position, Jones moved toward the front, running as high as sixth-place during the event. Jones says he feels like the top 10 result was a good day to build on moving forward.
“It was a really good day for Richard Petty Motorsports in the No. 43 Medalion Bank Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 LE,” said Jones. “It was a good day to build on – way better than last week at the Homestead-Miami Speedway. We are really headed in the right direction.
“Our team tried a lot of different things this week, made a lot of different changes and it is just nice to see them pay off to get a top-10 finish. That was definitely our goal for today, I felt like. Hopefully we can keep building on that and continue to get better and better each week.”
The West Coast Swing continues next week at Phoenix Raceway, where Jones has a best place finish of fourth in 2017 – but finished outside the top-20 in three out of the last four events.
