Each week, Kickin’ The Tires will highlight the 20th-place finisher from the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series. Standing as the middleman in weekends with 40-car fields, there is sure to be a story behind each one.
Michael McDowell held the torch for Front Row Motorsports Sunday at Pocono Raceway, as the veteran wheeled his No. 34 Ford to the 20th position in the Pocono 400.
Though not an ideal result, it was well-needed for a small team who struggled to avoid problems at the Tricky Triangle.
Starting 28th, McDowell suffered a few issue throughout the day, including nose damage in Stage 2 that required some repairs. Falling off the lead lap while getting penalized for too many men over the wall on lap 101, the race’s final caution on lap 148 put McDowell back on the lead lap for the run to the checkereds.
Here, he advanced to the 20th position, his third top 10 at Pocono and his first top-20 finish of the year since Texas seven races ago.
The result hits the team well after McDowell’s teammates Matt Tifft and David Ragan were involved in accidents that hidnered their days. Tifft also had transmission issues plague his No. 36.
McDowell heads next to Michigan International Speedway, where the 34-year-old will make his 300th Cup Series start.
