Jesse Love chose the perfect stage to score his first win of 2026, turning a season-long drought into a major championship boost at World Wide Technology Raceway.
The defending NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series champion entered Gateway sixth in the standings and 48 points behind Justin Allgaier, but his victory lifted him to fourth and cut his deficit to just 16 points with seven races remaining.
Love had not won since he secured the 2025 championship at Phoenix, but Gateway finally gave him the breakthrough he needed as he pursues a second straight title. The 21-year-old stayed near the front throughout the Nu Way 225, won Stage 2, and led 70 laps before delivering the decisive move late in the race.

Carson Kvapil controlled much of the event after starting from the pole and winning Stage 1. He led a race-high 105 laps and appeared positioned to score his first victory of the season, but Love remained within striking distance.
Love battled Kvapil and Sam Mayer for control during the middle portion before taking the lead and establishing himself as one of the strongest cars in the field.
Multiple cautions repeatedly interrupted the race, including a frightening pit-road pileup after Stage 1 that trapped much of the field and forced NASCAR to display the red flag.
The chaos damaged several Chase contenders, but Love avoided trouble and kept himself in position for the finish.
The race later produced another major championship moment when William Sawalich and Corey Day tangled while fighting near the top five. Day crashed into the inside wall and finished 33rd, dealing another blow to his title hopes.
Jesse Love Makes His Move When the Championship Stakes Rise
Kvapil reclaimed the lead during the closing stages, but Love managed to close the gap steadily. With 16 laps remaining, Love reached Kvapil through Turns 1 and 2, made contact, and completed the pass for the lead.
Kvapil lost momentum after the exchange and dropped behind Sheldon Creed, Mayer and Taylor Gray. Love pulled away from the battle behind him and beat Creed to the checkered flag by 0.896 seconds for the fourth win of his series career.
The result tightened Love’s position in the Chase. Creed took over the championship lead after finishing second, while Allgaier dropped to second in the standings following a damaged-car run to 13th. Kvapil remained ahead of Love in third, but only 16 points now separate the reigning champion from the top spot.
Love also leaves Gateway with momentum that had largely eluded him throughout the season. He repeatedly showed speed during 2026 but failed to convert those performances into a victory before the Chase began. Gateway changed that when race wins carry their greatest value.
“It’s been really hard, but I knew that if I just, if I keep my grit, if I keep my tenacity, if I keep my work ethic, and not just keep it, but improve it, then eventually one of those opportunities is going to be there, and I’m going to freaking take it, which we freaking did tonight,” Love said after the race.
Love now carries that momentum into the final seven races of his O’Reilly Series career before moving to the NASCAR Cup Series in 2027. Wood Brothers Racing has already selected him to drive its No. 21 Ford next season, giving Love a clear destination once his title defense ends.
He will enter Cup racing with an impressive resume that already includes the 2023 ARCA Menards Series championship, the 2024 O’Reilly Series Rookie of the Year award, and the 2025 series title.
Before that promotion comes along, Love still has an opportunity to leave Richard Childress Racing with consecutive championships.
