Joey Logano snatched his 40th NASCAR Cup Series win in a very dramatic finish at Bristol Motor Speedway on Saturday night, September 19, capitalizing on a fierce battle between Ty Gibbs and Carson Hocevar to win the Bass Pro Shops Night Race.
The Team Penske driver surged from fourth to first on the final restart, slipping past the frontrunners as they fought for position with fewer than 10 laps remaining.
Logano held off Kyle Larson by 1.248 seconds to claim his third victory of the 2026 season, while his teammate Ryan Blaney and Hocevar exchanged punches on pit road shortly after the checkered flag.
The victory marked Logano’s third Cup Series win at Bristol and tied him with NASCAR Hall of Famer Mark Martin for 20th on the all-time wins list.

The three-time champion also climbed four positions to third in the Chase standings, moving within 16 points of the championship lead with seven races remaining.
Logano’s late charge capped a strong night for the No. 22 Ford, which led 93 laps and won the opening stage after taking the lead from polesitter Larson during the first round of pit stops. However, Blaney controlled much of the race and led a race-high 202 laps before his evening ended during the final stage.
Gibbs also came out as a serious contender in his special M&M’s Toyota, which honored the late Kyle Busch. The Joe Gibbs Racing driver led 120 laps and survived a three-wide collision while battling through lapped traffic on Lap 432.
Alex Bowman moved up the track as Gibbs attempted to squeeze between his Chevrolet and Cole Custer’s car, causing contact that ended Bowman’s race. Gibbs continued despite the damage, but Hocevar kept challenging him for the top spot.
Their battle eventually handed Logano the opportunity he needed. Hocevar briefly moved ahead of Gibbs during the closing laps, but another caution set up the decisive restart.
As the two drivers raced side by side and drifted up the track, Logano charged through the bottom lane and cleared the leaders on Lap 494. Larson followed him into second, while Hocevar secured third ahead of Christopher Bell and Gibbs.
The crowd greeted Logano with boos when he climbed out of his car, but the veteran embraced the reaction and celebrated his unexpected triumph.
“Merry Christmas to me. I got a gift there,” Logano said while discussing how the closing laps changed his fortunes.

The celebrations soon gave way to an ugly confrontation between Blaney and Hocevar, whose earlier collision had ended the No. 12 driver’s race with 43 laps remaining.
Blaney had already overcome a pit road commitment-line penalty following a poorly timed caution on Lap 397 and worked his way back toward the front.
He passed Hocevar for second on Lap 457 before attempting to block the Spire Motorsports driver as Hocevar crossed underneath him. The resulting contact sent Blaney hard into the outside wall in Turn 1, leaving him with extensive damage and a 33rd-place finish.

Blaney confronted Hocevar after the race and grabbed his shoulder, prompting the 23-year-old to throw two punches.
The second blow sent Blaney stumbling backward, but he regained his footing and responded with a left-handed punch to Hocevar’s face. NASCAR officials and crew members intervened before the confrontation escalated further.
Blaney argued that Hocevar had sufficient room to race him without causing the accident. Hocevar, meanwhile, maintained that he had attempted a crossover move and believed Blaney had spun himself.
He also defended his response to the confrontation, insisting that he would not back down when his rival approached him aggressively.
The incident dealt Blaney another setback in the championship battle, dropping him to sixth in the standings, 52 points behind Larson.
The Hendrick Motorsports driver took over the points lead from Denny Hamlin by a single point after recording his third consecutive top-five finish to open the Chase. Bell sits fourth, 17 points behind Larson, as the Cup Series heads to Kansas Speedway for the Hollywood Casino 400 on September 27.
