Kyle Busch is still seeking his first NASCAR Cup Series win of 2020, but it will have to wait until at least Wednesday at Martinsville, after finishing second at Atlanta on Sunday evening.
After starting fourth due to a random draw, Busch looked as if he may capture that first win of the season.
Stages one and two produced finishes of second and third for his No. 18 M&M's Fudge Brownie Toyota Camry, but while they had good speed, Busch said they couldn't really push too hard.
“Our Fudge Brownie M&M’s Camry was pretty decent," said Busch. "We had good speed, you just couldn’t really push too hard. Every time I pushed too hard, it would really hurt my tires in the long run."
Busch only led for seven laps through out the 325 lap event but wasn't able to catch [Kevin] Harvick at the end, having to settle for second place at Atlanta — his third runner up finish of the season.
"I was trying to keep up with those front guys and as soon as I felt [like] I was pushing too hard and they were inching out on me, I just gave up and decided just to run and try to make sure I didn’t slip a tire and do the best I could without pushing anything too hard. Was able to get Martin [Truex Jr.] at least there at the end."
Busch who last won at Homestead-Miami Speedway last November will check off NASCAR Cup Series win No. 57 the next time he pulls into victory lane.
"Overall, my guys did a great job and they gave me a great M&M’s Fudge Brownie Camry," said Busch. "We were able to keep it up front all day. We had good pit stops all day. I didn’t screw up and speed on pit road today so we’ve got that going for us."
Next up the series heads to Martinsville Speedway on Wednesday. A track where Busch has two wins, 16 top-five and 17-top 10 finishes on his Cup Series resume.
