It was being in the right place at the wrong time for Justin Allgaier at Richmond Raceway.
On lap 227 going into Turn Three, Allgaier, Cole Custer, Austin Cindric, and Ryan Reed went four-wide. With how narrow the track is, Allgaier and Custer went for a spin, but Allgaier went into the outside wall.
He finished 32nd.
Throughout the entire regular season, the veteran driver has said that the goal is to gain as many points as possible so that you could have a bad night and it not “ruin” the day.
“I said all the way through this year that you have to build as many points as you can before the playoffs in case you have a night like tonight,” Allgaier said at the infield care center.
“That is the only advantage to the night is that we did our job up until this point. It really sucks. I am not going to lie to you, but it’s racing. We knew we had a couple strong runs here. We will keep plugging away.”
Despite not coming away with a better finish, Allgaier was proud of the work his team put in and hopes they can carry that into the next two races at the Charlotte Motor Speedway road course and Dover.
“I am really disappointed for our team. They did a great job. It was the right place at the wrong time. We will go to the next two and do what we can. Hopefully, we can do that,” he said.
Allgaier dropped from the points lead to third. He sits 21 points above the cut-off line.
