In his first race of 2018, Todd Gilliland was able to finish 14th. However, late race pit strategy provided trouble for the team.
Gilliland had to start the Alpha Energy Solutions 250 from the rear of the field due to an engine change during the three practice sessions on Friday. Despite coming from the rear of the field, Gilliland knew that he had a fast truck.
“Coming from the back was rough, but that’s what we had to do and once we got up there, we were really fast. We came down pit road and we were really tight that last run. Struggled a little bit there, but overall I’m very happy with the speed we had,” Gilliland stated.
Towards the end of the race, Gilliland and his crew played the strategy game with tires. While many teams used the same strategy work, Gilliland’s team was unable to make it work as well.
“We had something leaking rear end grease from the left rear onto the tire. I think that was losing a little bit of grip,” continued Gilliland. “Even before the cautions, it was just as fast as the guys out front. I am not sure where we lost the fire off speed. I just wish I could have got better restarts. Once you are falling back like that and people see it, they keep filling the holes; it gets frustrating for all involved.”
Because he missed the first three races of the season, Gilliland understands that he needs to win to be in the playoffs.
“All these tracks are. We are going to have to go out and win a race to be in the playoffs. We were just trying to be smooth today. We didn’t do a good job of that. We need to learn from every race and gain more next time,” Gilliland stated.
Gilliland sits 27th in driver points. He must win and be in the top-20 in points to be in the playoffs.
