Following each points race, Kickin’ the Tires takes a deep look at the current playoff grids for both the NASCAR XFINITY Series and Camping World Truck Series, evaluating the postseason picture for NASCAR’s second and third tours.
Camping World Truck Series
Track: Martinsville Speedway
Event: Texas Roadhouse 200
Race Winner: Johnny Sauter
Stage Winner(s): Johnny Sauter (Won Both Stages)
Who Won Big
Johnny Sauter: Saturday’s Round of 6 opener couldn’t have gone much better for Sauter and GMS Racing. The 2016 Truck Series champion won both stages and the race to punch his ticket to the Championship 4 for the third-straight year. He was already likely to make it, but the Wisconsinite’s dominant drive in Virginia made a statement that he’s the one to beat.
Noah Gragson: His seventh-place finish left an air of disappointment over the No. 18 team given that they had won the race last season, but Gragson scored 48 points and extended his advantage over the cutoff to 24 points with two races left in the round. Two more races like that will give his a shot at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
Brett Moffitt: What started off with a struggle ended in a second-place result for Moffitt and Hattori Racing. The lack of stage points hurt the team, but their strong finish kept them well clear of the cutoff line, which is all that matters in the end.
Justin Haley and Matt Crafton: The two drivers that entered Martinsville below the cutoff line both gained ground in the Round of 6 opener. Haley heads into Texas Motor Speedway just two points out, while Crafton is within reach with a 10-point deficit.
Who Hurt Their Odds:
Grant Enfinger: What had previously been a solid short track outing ended in disappointment for Enfinger when he spun out on Lap 161. Enfinger rallied to finish 14th, but lost ground to Haley and Crafton.
