CONCORD, N.C. – Although Joey Logano was ecstatic to become a father and welcome his son, Hudson, into the world; getting him here was less climatic than he had originally hoped – the 27-year-old racer envisioning he’d turn into a stunt driver trying to get is wife to the hospital just in the nick of time to give birth.
“I was kind of disappointed about the whole labor part,” Logano said, trying not to laugh but it didn’t work. “I was expecting something like, ‘oh my God, it’s happening’ and we’ve go to go haul the mail and drive off the road and go off the roading to get to the hospital in time because the baby is going to fall out and it’s going to be really cool and I was going to be excited for that moment. I had my (Ford) Raptor ready to go.”
But reality and Logano’s imagination were on opposite ends of the spectrum as Brittany was extremely calm when she said she thought it was time for their son to make his debut and fill a starring role in their lives.
“She was like, ‘I don’t know, let’s go to the doctor.’ And we go in and they were like, ‘yeah, sure you should go down there.’ And I’m like, ‘that’s it, like, I can’t go fast,’” Logano recalled the anxious build-up and immediate deflation as he realized the next few hours wouldn’t be anything like the scene from Father of the Bride 2, where Franck drove the expecting moms to the hospital. “They were like, ‘no, everything’s fine.’ I was like, ‘Crap.’”
Since becoming a father, Logano has had all the fun experiences of being a new dad, including a serious lack of sleep as, he said, Hudson is somewhat of a night owl and routinely comforting him in the wee hours of the morning. It’s something that most all new parents experience but he’s also found a new understanding of just what his own parents went through.
“We have little man now and that’s awesome,” Logano gushed. “He’s great, he’s doing well. He doesn’t like to sleep at night. That part isn’t so well but it’s worth it. It’s still really cool to hold him and just stare at him, you know what I mean. I’ll you what, you appreciate your parents a lot more. Man, it’s about 3 o’clock every morning and I am holding him and I am like, ‘dude, what do you want? I don’t know what you want.’ But it’s good, it’s good.”
As for Brittany, he said, she was doing great but he was quick to point out that Hudson is already developing his own personality.
“Already there are little things he does, like I said he is two weeks so he doesn’t do much, but the little things he can do like I do, or that Brittany does, it is really cool to see that,” he said. “When he first was born his eyes weren’t tied together and one was looking one way and one was looking the other. You know, it’s crazy to think that we were all that small at one point. It kind of changes your perspective on life quite a bit when you have a kid and I am sure it will from here on out, quite a bit.”
