For the third time in five accidents this week, a car went airborne at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
This time, it was Arrow Schmidt Peterson’s James Hinchcliffe, who snapped sideways in Turn 2 during Saturday’s first day of Indianapolis 500 qualifying.
Checked and released from the infield medical center, Hinchcliffe said something “caught” him before impact.
“The car was on the edge for sure,” Hinchcliffe said. “I was planning to dial some understeer it in, but something caught me in [Turn] 2.”
The 2016 pole winner for the 500, Hinchcliffe has had his share of tough days at Indy.
“It’s pretty much our nightmare,” he said. “I got a lot of faith in the Arrow guys. We’ll take another shot tomorrow.”
Happening in the blink of an eye, Hinchcliffe understands the balancing act of making a qualifying run at Indy and how quick it can swing one direction.
“That’s what it’s like to be on the edge at Indy. It’s what it’s all about,” he said. “It’s a shame. I don’t know what to say. It’s tough.”
