ARCA West at Roseville: Team Reactions and Analysis

By Vincent Delforge, special to KickinTheTires.net

The ninth race of the season, the 1002th in the history of the ARCA Menards West Series was held at All American Speedway in Roseville, CA. The NAPA Auto Parts 150 presented by Berco Redwood was won by Cole Moore, his first career win. He gave Bill McAnally Racing its 99th victory. The first dating back to July 10, 1998 with Gary Smith at the Portland Speedway.

In the championship Moore goes back to the second position but at a good distance, 51 points, from the undisputed leader Jake Drew who continues his uninterrupted series of top-five this season since he finished second in the race.

The Roseville race review is available here.

If his first race at Evergreen was complicated at all levels, that of Roseville was much better. A correct qualification and a smart race avoiding problems. Admittedly, his pace was below most of the drivers and he could not envisage the top-10 on a regular basis. But by benefiting twice from the free pass, he knew how to make his way and finished in a good 11th position even if as he says:

“Just staying out of trouble was tough”.

After two races away from the circuits, the young Colombian had high hopes for his returns at the Roseville race, especially since he had already obtained two top-10s on short tracks earlier in the season. Candidate for the top-10, his race was complicated in the second segment.

Pushed into spun by a competitor on the 114th lap, he was going to lose several laps before being able to get back on the track. His car refusing to restart, he had to wait for a tow truck to push him. All this dropping him in the rankings several rounds from the top-10.

Well , it was a tough race. We showed speed in practice and qualifying despite being my first time there. During the race we were fighting for the top 10 trying to move forward but I got spun by another car. When I tried to get the car running again. The car wasn’t turning on because of a Cable in the alternator was bad. So I had to wait for someone to push me to get my car running. That costs us 4 laps… I’m taking this learning and moving forward to the next race” Arias says.

A new pole position, a new good race and then a perhaps too cautious restart 16 laps from the finish probably cost him the victory as he explains to us:

“Pole was pretty cool and I feel my race was good. Car is very clean and we did a great job managing the race and the championship. I wasn’t surprised by his (Cole Moore) pace as I could tell he was strong. When I took the lead I chose to restart on the bottom to keep things safe and make sure we bring a clean car home. I feel if I was on a need to win situation I would have chosen the top side.”

But in the championship he does a good job. In addition, he continues his impressive series of top-fives this season with a perfect nine out of nine!

Qualified in the top-10, Koga made a somewhat anonymous start to the race but maintained sufficient pace throughout the race to obtain a new top-10. Unfortunately, at 27 laps to go, he was going to have an accident with Vince Little who he was taking a lap on.

The entire front end of his Toyota was destroyed, forcing driver Jerry Pitts Racing to dismount. His third DNF due to an accident this season. His 99th career race will not leave him with a good memory but Takuma is already focused on the Las Vegas race where he will enter the club of drivers with 100 career starts.

Tanner Reif. (Photo Courtesy of Sal Sigala Jr via Vincent Delforge.)

Only sixth. For Tanner it is a disappointment because he started the race from fourth position. The reason ? He didn’t have the rhythm due to a car coming out of the corners with difficulty. Losing positions to P.J. Pedroncelli, Landen Lewis, Todd Souza and Kyle Keller during the first segment.

Finally he moved up the rankings at the end of the race thanks to retirements and his overtaking on Smotherman and John Moore. He loses a position in the championship where he is now third. That said, the race was interesting because it demonstrated once again that despite his young age, Tanner drove with his head. Failing to be able to aim for victory, he raced intelligently to score as many points as possible. It is the mark of champions.

Horrible. It was the first word that came to Lowden’s mind to sum up his race. Nothing worked for the driver of car No. 11.  The officials didn’t raise the yellow flag directly after Burgess’ spun in the 13th lap and Lowden ran into the 88 a few seconds later… Car out of order for the night…

However the team obtains its first top10 of its young history thanks to the second pilot, the rookie RJ Smotherman.

Lowden tells us more about his race: “Horrible! Horrible car. Simply a bad day steering dangerously didn’t work.  Missed practice and qualifying. Tore it apart to see if we could at least make race, albeit start last. I knew after second this car was junk, should parked. Tried running the top to see if I could cruise when I heard Matt (spotter), going into turn 3, “turn down, turn down” …. but car didn’t turn at all and “bam”. No structural, but a bit of damage none the less. Fortunately I put the young RJ (Smotherman) in the 21, kid did a good job ended up 7th.”

No. 12 Kyle Keller (Jerry Pitts Racing) Start 11th – Fin 5th

Kyle Keller. (Photo Courtesy of Sal Sigala Jr via Vincent Delforge)

Keller likes the top-five, that’s for sure. Modestly qualified in 11th position, he will very quickly gain positions and fight at the gates of the top-five during the first segment. The race facts will help him a little to integrate it. But once in the top-five, it’s impossible to dislodge it!

Since his return to Jerry Pitts’ team at Irwindale, he is for the second time, after Irwindale, the best rookie in the race. The next race should suit him since for his debut in Las Vegas he finished fourth in 2020. Finally, we come to regret that Kyle did not do the whole season with Jerry Pitts, he would undoubtedly have had a say in the championship.

No. 13 Todd Souza (Central Coast Racing) Start 12th – Fin 4th

Todd Souza. (Photo Courtesy of Sal Sigala Jr via Vincent Delforge.)

Bad qualifications? Yes and no. Certainly it is preferable to start from the first positions to avoid problems on a short track. But Souza is very experienced and he made a smart new run. One could even call it “wise”. Which is paradoxical with a driver as aggressive and spectacular as Souza. But this technique worked and he gets a third consecutive top-five. As unbelievable as it may seem, it is only the second time in his long career (106 races) after the 2019 season that he has achieved this! And what is the common point between his two times? The Roseville race is one of them!

Michael Munoz his crew chief declaring very “wisely”: “The central coast racing team did a great job bringing home a 4th place finish in Roseville in front of a sold out crowd. The team learned a lot this weekend and can’t wait for next week to get back on track in Las Vegas.”

Landen Lewis. (Photo Courtesy of Sal Sigala Jr via Vincent Delforge.)

What a pity… Such a great race ruined by a single small error… Lewis was heading for fourth position, at least, as for the 136th lap, entering turn 3, he lost the front of his Chevrolet and harpooned the rear of P.J. Pedroncelli. The two men ending their race in the outer wall. Car too damaged to be able to return to the track.

But if there is one thing to remember from this race, it is the confirmation of the return to form of the Bill McAnally Racing team. And it’s not just because the team was riding on its Roseville hometrack. For a few races, the drivers have been fighting for the top positions. With better luck, the end of the season looks promising.

For his first race with BMR, the young driver will not have been successful. A first spun in the second lap and it’s already a lap lost on the leaders. He will benefit from the free pass during the next yellow flag.

Unfortunately he was going to suffer a puncture on the 49th lap following contact with a competitor. Remaining immobilized on the track, the officials penalized him, considering that he deliberately caused the yellow flag by remaining stalled… All this put together destroying any hope of a good result. But the experience gained will be beneficial for the next race in Las Vegas.

“Taking it all in stride. Definitely not how we wanted it to go last weekend but it is what it is. The team worked so hard all week to get the 19 ready and then to get cleaned out on third lap is a really tough break. Lesson learned. So we’ll take the positives from Roseville and head to The Bullring in Las Vegas. We have the speed and we want to run up front. Our time is coming” Hingorani says.

“I had the time of my life tonight”.

Those were the words that Smotherman used about his race. And yes, this is the big surprise of the race. Starting from behind, he will make an intelligent race by managing to stay in the leader’s lap. Improving as the race progresses, especially in the second segment with more speed. He will even join the top-five for the last restart. Certainly he will be overtaken by Keller and Reif in the closing laps but this seventh position is like a victory for him and his team.

It is a grateful Smotherman who tells us: “P7 in Roseville with the ARCA series this weekend after starting 18th. Had such a fun weekend and a great result in such a stacked field. I’m just so thankful for the opportunities that I’ve been given and the great team that backs me.

“Thank you to Chris Lowden, Stoney’s Rockin Country, Blue Valor Whiskey, Affordable Autos, Snowdens Landscape, Wulfunstien construction, 3D Construction, Matt, Tony, Dave, Christopher Chris, and Monica at Jackson Racecars, my dad, mom, grandpa, grandma, sister, Bob for coming out to help this weekend and everyone else that’s apart of this whole deal. He knows this Roseville track by heart and he will have succeeded in his return to the West Series by achieving a nice top-10. But the satisfaction of John, as a father, is above all to have been there, in the same race, as that won by his son Cole. In 2015 he finished 17th and ahead of his son. Seven years later, the student has surpassed the master.

Yet John’s race was not easy. He is at the origin of the accident between Burgess and Lowden since it was he who pushed the Australian in spun. He will cause another yellow flag on the 63rd lap. But this time it was he who left in spun. At the end of the race he will even have the possibility of considering the top-five before losing three positions in the last five laps.

The years go by but are not alike for P.J. in Roseville. Last year he won his first career victory there, while this year he had to retire after being sent into the wall by Lewis just 14 laps from the end. Too bad because he had managed to gain a few positions and was again fourth at the time. He even looked like he could come and fight for the top spot. Luckily the car is repairable.

“Went and had some fun this weekend. Raced our last ARCA race of the season. Qualified P6. Race started and drove up to p2 and was running P3-P4 pretty much all of the race. With 15 laps to go everyone was starting to get aggressive.

“Car behind me got in little to deep and washed up into me, I tried saving it but ended up hitting the wall with the nose and puncturing the radiator. It was fun after taking a few races off, and coming back, and still being competitive. I’d like to thank all my awesome crew guys for coming out and busting butt like usual. We will come back in 2023, and go for the championship again.” P.J. says.

What to say? Zero laps for Tuttle who could not start as he explains to us: “Saturday’s race didn’t go as planned for us we lost our oil pump and lost oil pressure so we brought her in right away we’re trying to get all pressure back with a push truck without asking to crank on the motor too hard or able to get all pressure so we just brought her back in. Now we’ve already got the motor being tore down found the issue and should be good to go for Vegas.”

Too bad all these mechanical problems this year.

Excellent race from Iest who was a candidate for victory during the 150 laps. He led the race for 39 laps during the first segment. It will constantly stay in the top-4. It is his second third place in three races.

“We got to the lead on the outside. And then eventually we got passed by Drew and running in second position and we got good battles between me, Drew and Cole Moore in a lot of traffic. And then I lossing a spot there and we got a little bit damage when running in third position. Car got really tight after that and we lost a bit of speed.” Iest said.

Roseville is really a track that suits him well since he had already obtained second position last year.

Mike Naake telling us: « Joey were solid Got the lead from from the and drove away somewhere close to lap 100 got a bad restart and bangs wheels with another car not the tow out a little and then thing was just too tight ran third with no damage, a good night”.

Smart racing for a driver not so “old and rusty” as Joanides explains in detail: “Tight, tight, tight. We struggled with the car all day. Very tight from the time we unloaded and despite a BUNCH of changes trying to free it up, was still very tight in the race and continued to get worse as the laps wore on. With the nature of this race however, survival is more important than speed often times and last night was no exception.

“I laugh, because someone tried to tell me after my SRL win that I can still drive well enough to win, but reflexes slow as you age and I’m probably lacking a bit in that regard. Well, Saturday sure demonstrated that my reflexes are just fine. Avoided quite a few very close calls and our survival netted us with a decent lead lap finish in the top 10. We’ll take it and try to make it better for Vegas.”

Thanks to two free passes and despite a clash with Kamisky, it offers the first top10 of the year to PP1M to the delight of the team and the fans. Because the Joe Nava band is one of those with the highest sympathy capital.

First career top-10 on oval for the road ringer from Anderson, CA.

Thirteenth last year, he made good progress on this track which he visited for the second time. Ninth is a great result especially after being involved in three yellow flags! Thanks to the free pass obtained during the penultimate yellow of the evening, he was back in the lap of the leader but seemed unable to do better than 11th position when Lewis and Pedroncelli got out of the race. And hop two positions won! But Kamisky was not unworthy because he still had to be there to be able to benefit from it.

A somewhat difficult race for the rookie but which was rich in learning. Fast in qualifying as in his first race at Irwindale, he would be able to stay in the top 10 for a long time during the first fifty laps before losing speed following premature tire wear. He lost a lap but benefited from the free pass during the midway break. Unfortunately, he will not be able to find the rhythm afterwards and will gradually but surely lose ground on the leaders. In the end he finished 12th at three laps.

And as its owner Mike Naake says: “Bradley had a night of learning.”

For his first oval race in the West Series, Little will have experienced a lot of emotions. The joy of being there but also the frustration at the end. The reason, he had a difficult car to drive but he was especially mistreated by two of his competitors. Finally, a lot of wasted time and a great opportunity to get a first top-10 that flew away.

“Eventful for sure! Car was decent and we were just managing tires and staying on lead lap. Avoided like at least fives crashes but eventually the 7 car spun off of turn 4 and I went low, avoided it but then he was either hit from behind or just being an idiot but the next thing I know the 7 (Koga) car drove into my passenger side door and right front.

“From then we were just riding along trying not to go down laps but ended up getting punted into turn 3 by the 80 (Kamisky) car and then there was only 9 laps left so just finished where we were. I think 14th but I really thought we had a top 10 and possibly top 7 but oh well.” Little said

Asked if we will see him again by the end of the year, Little tells us: “I think I’m gonna be forced to call it a year and not make Vegas or Phoenix. Car got pretty tore up and I just don’t think financially I’m gonna be able to get it together in less than two weeks and I just don’t think timing wise I can get it put together back in two weeks. But we’ll see where things end up but thanks for asking.”

Really bad luck for our young Australian. As she made a cautious start to the race in a choppy pack, she was pushed by John Moore and spun off. Until then, nothing unacceptable… But no… Because the officials curiously did not wave the yellow flag when she spun on the track and… BAM! Chris Lowden not having slowed down because he could not know the situation, the view obscured by other cars, hit her violently from the front. As a result, two cars were badly damaged and two drivers had to retire after around ten laps…

2022 is really a difficult year for Bridget but it is in adversity that we become stronger.

No doubt, the All American Speedway is really the track where Cole Moore has obtained the most victories. In all series. All he needed was a win in the West Series. It is done ! His first career win. He will have to wait a long time. He was so close many times. Here he succeeded and with style. His overtaking from the outside on Jake Drew during the penultimate restart was simply magnificent. Moore will perfectly resist Drew until the checkered flag and finally earn his first career victory.

“That was a tough one. I had Jake [Drew] right there with me at the end. Those top restarts, it was risky. I knew he could send it in and hit me, but he drove me clean. We had a great car. Shoutout to Bill McAnally Racing. First win of the year for me. First of my career. I’m so happy. It means everything. I have my whole family out here. My mom. My dad was in the race. That makes in even more special. It means everything.”Moore said.

He is the 201st winner in West Series history.
