TALLADEGA, Al. – A group of peaceful protesters in pickup trucks and on motorcycles – all carrying the rebel battle flag – paraded back and forth on Speedway Boulevard in opposition to NASCAR’s banning of the confederate flag at its events.
The group protest was organized by Charles Burdette of Lincoln, Al. and he said the racing series has received its last dollar from him. The sentiment was the same from the other roughly two-dozen people gathered down from the track after making their first pass.
“Our southern heritage has been pushed to death and we are tired of it,” Burdette told Kickin’ the Tires, as those in the background cheered when passersby honked in support. “NASCAR is going to be a thing of the past. They are taking everything out for what it stands for. It was put together by rednecks, moonshiners and hillbillies”
Burdette said he knows the protest with fall on deaf ears as NASCAR tries to shed the rebel flags and racial division it has seen in the past. The move by the leaders of the sport was met with overwhelming support across the country. Through the years, NASCAR has implemented diversity programs to include all races, as well as, women drivers. Additionally, Bubba Wallace recently drove a Black Lives Matter car at Martinsville Speedway.
“They don’t care but they won’t get no more of my money,” he said.
Two weeks ago, NASCAR released a statement on the now-banned flag, “The presence of the confederate flag at NASCAR events runs contrary to our commitment to providing a welcoming and inclusive environment for all fans, our competitors and our industry. Bringing people together around a love for racing and the community that it creates is what makes our fans and sport special. The display of the confederate flag will be prohibited from all NASCAR events and properties.”

I agree, NASCAR died with Dale Earnhardt. From about 1995 through the 2002 season, I would watch every single race. I still have a framed Dale Earnhardt poster in my garage. Since then, I’ve gradually watched less and less, to the point that I don’t think I watched any at all last year, and all I’ve watched this year was about 5 minutes of Daytona. This flag deal is enough to make me boycott, but it’s hard to boycott something you aren’t watching anyway.

I have never been a real Top Tier NASCAR fan anyway. All my racing hero’s came from short tracks in Virginia and surrounding states. Guys like Ray Hendrick, Sonny Hutchins, Al Grinnin, Tommy Ellis, Roy Hendrick, Sam Ard, Butch Lindley, Eddie Johnson, Eddie Crouse, Booper Bare, Buddy Campbell, Louie Littlepage, Alvin Tignor, My Dad and Brother Mark Cunningham and many other hard working , hard driving no BS kind of guys. To me short tracks paved or dirt are the way to go. In my opinion if this part of Nascar’s fan base stops watching and stops attending races and stops buying memorabilia. This will be a huge impact on their revenue. The best protest is to stop participating, they will get the picture when the cash stops flowing. Support you local short tracks! Just my .02 cents.

This was the first year I would have been able to go to a nascar race. I got a ticket for my birthday. Since the confederate flag is not allowed I dont wanna go and will not. I’m a little amazed at the author’s ability to write, yet be so horrible at counting. We drove through the area this afternoon and counted at least fifty or so motorcycles alone displaying the “Battle Standard.” I think that it’s sad that the author would lead readers to believe that there were only twenty or so protesters; when there was, in fact, far more showing support. NASCAR will surely reap the benefits of the decision to turn it’s back on its fan-base in favor of a political trend.

I’ve been a huge fan of NASCAR since the early 1960’s, since they are removing the Rebel Flag, and they no longer want to have any sponsors promoting the 2nd Amendment, or businesses that sell guns I’m done with NASCAR. I’ve been a life time member of the NRA for over 50 years. This is America and we have the right to fly any flag. As a vet my American Flag always comes first, but the Rebel Flag and the American flag represents both sides of my family fighting during the Civil War.
