DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Ryan Newman was leading the final lap of the Daytona 500 when his car got a shove from Ryan Blaney, sending him into the outside wall and then airborne as the No. 32 of Corey Lajoie slammed into Newman’s driver’s side front. Newman’s car flipped multiple times down the front stretch before coming to rest and catching on fire as emergency crews quickly responded.
He was immediately taken to Halifax Health for treatment. After an hour, or so, NASCAR released a statement provided to them by Roush-Fenway Racing that Newman’s condition was “serious” but his injuries were, “non-life-threatening.”
As the crash played out, Denny Hamlin drove past Blaney to win his second Daytona 500 in as many years. He became only the fourth driver to ever win back-to-back Daytona 500s. Blaney finished second followed by Chris Buescher in third.
