Though much of the race was spent under caution, the finish of Sunday’s Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series race at Pocono Raceway was about speed and nothing less.

For Sheldon Creed, the sophomore diver for GMS Racing nearly had enough of it to score his first career in the series. Making a three-wide pass for the race lead down the backstretch with two laps to go, the No. 2 Chevrolet was out front when the white flag flew.

The only one to have a say in it was Brandon Jones, who wrapped around the outside of Creed in the Tunnel Turn to score the victory, his first in the series.

Creed had to settle for third, a disappointing yet happy result.

“This truck was so good,” Creed said. “Air is so difficult here. I gave it away, honestly. I gave him [Brandon Jones] the top on the frontstretch and that’s where the race was won right there. I should have stayed on the top and let him get next to me.

Winning both stages and leading a race-high 31 laps on the day, built a level of confidence throughout the race to make a three-wide move for the lead late.

“I didn’t know what they were going to do,” he said. “I had a huge run going down the backstretch and they split. If I stay behind the No. 51, I’m going to get tight. I jumped the hole and it stuck.”

With his second top five of the season, Creed is pleased, jumping from ninth to fourth in driver points.

“Hats off to my guys. We’ve been struggling honestly and I’ve been working hard with Josh Wise and I’m starting to think it’s me, maybe. Maybe something I’m doing wrong. We finally got a really good truck today and was able to race how I wanted.”
