AUSTIN, TX — Three-time NASCAR champion Tony Stewart took Formula 1 colleagues, Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen, around the Circuit of The Americas track in Austin leading up to the Formula 1 event this weekend.
It was the first time Stewart had been in a stock car since the final race at Homestead-Miami Speedway in 2016 when he officially retired from stockcar racing. Dominating his time now has been open-wheel dirt racing, where he logs 100 races a year, he said. The trip around the 3.24-mile purpose-built road course outside the state’s capital was a little different as the No. 14 Ford Mustang had a passenger seat with Magnussen and Grosjean swapping out as Stewart smoked up the track, literally.
If Stewart has lost anything behind the wheel, it didn’t show as smoke billowed from his spinning tires as he made the sharp left in Turn 11. Once Stewart wraps up his duties with the Haas F1 team, he is headed to Texas Motor Speedway for the Texas Sprint Car Nationals on the dirt track.
