NASCAR K&N Pro Series East officials have handed down an L6 penalty, the most severe penalty, to DGR-Crosley for violating preseason testing policy.

The No. 17 team, owned by David Gilliland, and driver Ty Gibbs were penalized for conducting a private test at New Smyrna Speedway Jan. 14.

According to NASCAR rules, private tests at NASCAR-sanctioned tracks that are part of the 2019 K&N Pro Series schedule are strictly prohibited.

Gilliland and Gibbs were fined $5,000, a loss of 100 championship car owner and driver points, suspension from the series until the completion of the third event and placed on NASCAR probation until Dec. 31. Car chief Chad Walters was fined $5,000 and suspended indefinitely from the series.

According to a NASCAR representative, the team used the NASCAR-approved spec engine and that there are pictures from the test.

In a statement, DGR-Crosley denies NASCAR’s accusations.

“This afternoon NASCAR made us aware of a penalty they are imposing for actions that occurred during an ARCA Racing Series test on Jan. 14. We strongly believe that we did not violate any rules and will therefore appeal the penalty immediately. While the appeals process runs its course, we will move forward and keep our focus on the upcoming season.”

The team was not in violation of the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menard’s rule book.
