FORT WORTH, Texas – There were some tense moments during Robby Gordon’s Stadium Super Trucks finale following the O’Reilly Auto Parts 500 at Texas Motor Speedway but quick thinking saved the day as a radio problem nearly led to calamity.

Gordon, who created the series several years ago, lost communications with officials and didn’t know the track had gone “RED” as he launched off a 45-foot crossover jump and nearly hit safety workers and a tow truck, as several thousand NASCAR fans watched from the grandstands.

The safety crew was responding to a crash involving Bill Hynes (@TheThrill57) who had flipped his truck several times upon landing the jump and came to rest on a water barrier. Luckily everyone was able to get clear of Gordon’s flying fluorescent orange truck. It helped that Gordon’s quick reaction by locking up the brakes before he even landed slowed him down enough on touchdown to let a tow truck clear the track before the two vehicles collided.

Gordon said afterward that he had lost radio communications and was glad everyone was okay. He sent his best to Hynes, who is described as a “tough racer” and was able to walk under his own power to an awaiting ambulance to be checked out at the infield care center.
